Netropolis

Netropolis is one of CNS' most ambitious projects to date: gaining control of the communications infrastructure - physically, informationally, electronically.

As a result of an in-depth study, CNS plans to focus long term communication efforts on the following:

  • Continued campus funding for riser projects, ICCS, and CENIC ONI.

  • Use of communications pilot projects to deploy new technologies rather than move the entire campus quickly toward any new service.

  • Provide the campus greater control of communications infrastructure.

The last of these focus points, provide the campus greater control of communications infrastructure, will be defined within the scope of the Netropolis project.  CNS must design a plan that takes into account the known forces that will have a profound effect on our long term plan, including:

  • a forecasted 80% growth in voice, video, and data connections from approx. 68,000 to 110,000

  • an expected growth in user base; 4000 students over the next 10 years

  • over 25% of the space on campus is scheduled for some form of renewal

  • a 20% reduction in the campus budget

and maximize the effectiveness of our internal resources to improve and expand the services we offer our external/internal customers.

Background:

Recent Developments:

  • Representatives from all units within CNS participated in a review of five RFI responses for an Infrastructure Management System.  The respondents did not demonstrate an adequate solution for the criteria.  The Information Systems unit of CNS presented a proposal in response to the RFI and the proposal was accepted.
  • A team has been identified and assigned the task of evaluating and improving the shopping cart.  The team will enlist the assistance of customers to test and give feedback on the changes.
  • A team has been created to document CNS processes using flowcharts.  The Process Review Project Manager will work with this team to prioritize the processes to be documented.
